Shane Michael Hatton: Author of Lead The Room – Communicate a Message That Counts in Moments That Matter
1. Tell us what you do?
I run my own practice helping leaders become more effective communicators – whether that’s in the conference room, the meeting room or the lunchroom. I’m a coach, trainer, speaker and author in this space but I like to think of myself more like a pair of glasses and some liquid courage for leaders. I help them communicate with greater clarity and deeper confidence.
2. When did you join IABC Victoria and why?
I joined the IABC in October 2019, because experience has taught me that the people you surround yourself with matters. I knew that if I wanted to continue to learn and grow, I would need to put myself in a room with the best thinkers and practitioners in the field. For me the IABC is a finger on the pulse for the communications profession and the learning that comes from the community is second to none.
3. In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges facing communication professionals right now, and in the future?
We are operating in a world that is information rich and attention poor. We have more to say with less words and less time to say it. Managing the downward pressure from senior leaders to overcommunicate with the upward pressure of keeping staff informed but not overwhelmed is a challenge that, in my opinion, will continue to weigh heavily as we navigate a remote working and digital environment.
4. How do you think IABC can help communication professionals overcome these challenges and stay ahead of the game?
We get better when we get together. Creating a space to share stories, experiences and ideas around a common purpose not only helps people feel less alone, but it helps us grow. The advantage of community is being able to contribute to it and receive from it. There’s nothing like bringing together a room (in person or online) of people who speak the same language and that’s one of the things the IABC can do well.
5. What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out?
Be intentional in your connections. Think about the people you want to learn from and learn with. Because the people you surround yourself with matters.
