“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.”
That’s what basketball star Michael Jordan once said and I’m referencing that quote for two very good reasons.
First, it reminds me of the focus of our talented and dedicated team serving with me at IABC Victoria who are working hard for our members.
And, second, I’m here in Michael Jordan’s heartland of Chicago preparing for a communications summit with my company, Motorola Solutions, as I write this report!
Welcome to our 2015 board
At last month’s IABC Victoria Annual General Meeting we voted in our new Board members and re-elected some others. I’m very pleased to take the baton as President from Zora Artis, who has done a phenomenal job leading the team throughout 2013/14. (More on Zora later).
Also returning to the fold are; Anna Chalko and Vanessa Snowden (Events/ Professional Development) Wayne Aspland (Brand & Communication), Julie Weldon (Membership) and Alison GIllies (Education).
We’ve also added some great, fresh talent including Suzanne Wadell (Vice President), Kate Raulings (Secretary), Lin MacDonald (Treasurer), Peta McKellar (Sponsorship), Lisa Bigelow (joining Wayne in Brand & Communication) and Kate van der Drift (Student Liaison).
If you'd like to know more about our Board members, you can read their bios here. Please join me in welcoming the team and thanking them for volunteering their services to keep driving IABC Victoria’s success and efforts for our members.
Annual Strategy Day
On 28 February the new board came together for our annual strategy day. It was a great event and wonderful opportunity for our new team to collaborate and map out our 2015 strategy. Our newest members are very enthusiastic and have made an immediate impact with their contributions and perspectives.
We focused on our strategy and portfolio plans for the year ahead and discussed ways of strengthening our effectiveness.
As a result we’re making some positive changes to improve your experience with IABC Victoria including:
- Increasing direct interaction between members and the board
- Planning a new and improved annual Gala event
- Adding to the diversity and quality mix of our events
- Planning to deliver a better IABC Victoria website
- Sharing more resources and guests from IABC’s international network with Victoria
So get ready for some very positive changes. You can read more about our Strategy Day here.
Our recent issues and crisis management event involving leaders from a range of industries and disciplines provided valuable insights for attendees. We're planning to build on that with our upcoming event, Driving the Diversity Agenda. Please join us on March 18 at Deakin University Melbourne City Centre as we examine the need and opportunity for workplace diversity in the communications profession.
Special offer for CAS 2015 attendees
Another big event coming up is the 2015 Corporate Affairs Summit in Sydney. CAS is one of the most important Corporate Affairs and Communications summits in Australia. Practicioners from all over get together to hear from many of Australia's… and the world's… leading strategists and thinkers.
And the good news is that, like last year, IABC has negotiated a special deal for our members and friends. All you need to do is add IABC20 as the promotional code in your application form.
Chapter Management Awards
We recently received great news from IABC globally – that Victoria had won four Chapter Management Awards from the association at its annual awards in Orlando, Florida. The awards recognise leading IABC chapters globally and are reward for our renewed focus on strengthening the profession and providing value to our members. We received gongs for Communications, Membership Marketing, Professional Development and Leadership Development.
While we’re proud of the achievement we don’t see this as a reason to boast, but rather an indication that we’re on track as a chapter in fulfilling our objectives. I mentioned Zora earlier. She has been absolutely instrumental to IABC’s success over the past 18 months and a simply incredible leader. With her continued support as Immediate Past President and contributions from the entire team on the Board I know we can make 2015 another memorable year for all the right reasons.
Until next time, take care and keep striving for absolute excellence in the communications profession.
Just like Michael Jordan, we must never be contented with good enough, but to always “shoot the lights out” and stand out from the rest.
